November
2, 2004. One of the very few bright spots in that election happened
in Ferndale (MI). Proposal B, amending the City's charter to provide
for election of the mayor and city council by use of Instant Runoff
Voting (IRV), passed overwhelmingly, ca, 70% to 30%. It was a truly
amazing victory, especially considering that most people gave it
little chance of passing at all.
Read more about the passing of Proposal B on the firv.org website.
The official announcement is here;
it also internally links to other information, including an explanation
of how IRV works.
See
also Center for Voting and Democracy
site for more information about
IRV.

FIRV also provides a list of others working in Michigan and elsewhere
on IRV. When we have updated the list, we will post it here.
For
a more complete listing of vitally needed electoral reforms, please
see the Voter Bill
of Rights at the Nov.3.US site. If you believe in the right
to vote, go there and print it out. (And maybe pass it around to
other people you know and start some discussions about what democracy
should be, as opposed to a knee-jerk propaganda word.)
Please
watch this spot for news on efforts in other cities to pass resulotions
calling for the use of IRV in local elections, as well as a possible
state campaign. There may also be other proposed reforms coming
up in line with the voter's bill of rights.
Numeous
questions still linger with regard to the election of 2004. None
of them is more pervasive though than the questions raised about
e-voting machines. We need to continue to push for passage of legislation,
requiring verified paper trails for these machines, as well as open
source code. If you agree and wish to advocate this to others click
here for your free blackboxvoting
bumper stickers!
